A broken or damaged tooth can leave you with an unsightly, painful, and irritating situation. However, with help from a dental crown, your dental crownsdentist can restore your tooth and its biting surface ensuring that you can eat and speak normally. Find out more about dental crowns, what they are, and what your dentist can use them for with Dr. Jeanette Murphy at her practice in Monroe, MI.

What is a crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-colored dental restoration which fits over a tooth in order to protect it. However, dentists also use crowns for other purposes. A crown on either side of a dental bridge holds it in place. A crown can also cover a dental implant to replace a missing tooth. In addition to cosmetic improvements, crowns can also stabilize a tooth with a large filling, restore the biting surface of a worn tooth, or ensure that your cracked tooth does not become further damaged.

What is the procedure for a crown like?
Crowns usually require two separate visits. First your dentist will prepare your tooth to receive the crown by removing small parts of enamel from its outer edges. This makes room for the crown and aides in the bonding process. Then, your dentist takes an impression of your mouth and sends it to a dental laboratory who, in turn, uses it as a guide to design and create your dental crown. Your second appointment will be about two weeks later after the lab has had time to customize the crown. At your second appointment, your dentist will fit and adjust your crown to the tooth and permanently place it into the mouth using dental cement. Your dentist will make a temporary crown to protect your prepared tooth between visits.

Learn more about the fastest approach to getting a visibly whiter smile.teeth whitening

From the brightly colored sugar cookies and the mulled wine to the dozens of coffees you drank to keep awake after all those late-night holiday festivities, it’s not just your energy levels that have fallen flat; so has your smile. If you are dealing with a yellow, dulling smile our Monroe, MI, cosmetic dentist, Dr. Jeanette Murphy, can easily get your smile back on track.

Whether you are just tired of DIY whitening tricks that don’t seem to work or you have a special occasion coming up, there are many reasons our patients turn to our Monroe dentist for professional whitening. After all, home whitening isn’t as powerful or offers results as quickly as ours. If you want to see whiter results in just one session then professional in-office whitening is the way to go.

Professional Teeth Whitening vs. At-Home Whitening Kits

One major difference between professional teeth whitening and at-home whitening kits is that the whitening gel we use has a much higher percentage of carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide, the two most common active ingredients known to break up stain molecules and actually brighten the shade of your teeth.

The whitening gels within at-home kits don’t contain a high percentage of active ingredients, so while you will notice results over time with continual use you won’t be able to achieve results as quickly as you would with professional whitening.

What happens during professional in-office whitening?

First, we will need to clean your teeth to make sure that there is no plaque or tartar buildup. Once teeth are thoroughly cleaned we will place a dental dam in your mouth, which will protect your lips and gums and prevent them from coming in contact with the whitening gel.

Next, we will apply the whitening gel to the front of your teeth and leave it on your teeth for several minutes. In some instances, a special dental light is directed over the teeth to speed up the whitening process. One whitening session usually involves multiple whitening gel applications to get the results you want.

If you are ready to get that brighter, dazzling smile then look no further than our professional in-office whitening system here in Monroe, MI. You’ll be amazed at the results and you’ll feel more confident in your appearance. We know it!
