What Are Crowns?

A broken or damaged tooth can leave you with an unsightly, painful, and irritating situation. However, with help from a dental crown, your dental crownsdentist can restore your tooth and its biting surface ensuring that you can eat and speak normally. Find out more about dental crowns, what they are, and what your dentist can use them for with Dr. Jeanette Murphy at her practice in Monroe, MI.

What is a crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-colored dental restoration which fits over a tooth in order to protect it. However, dentists also use crowns for other purposes. A crown on either side of a dental bridge holds it in place. A crown can also cover a dental implant to replace a missing tooth. In addition to cosmetic improvements, crowns can also stabilize a tooth with a large filling, restore the biting surface of a worn tooth, or ensure that your cracked tooth does not become further damaged.

What is the procedure for a crown like?
Crowns usually require two separate visits. First your dentist will prepare your tooth to receive the crown by removing small parts of enamel from its outer edges. This makes room for the crown and aides in the bonding process. Then, your dentist takes an impression of your mouth and sends it to a dental laboratory who, in turn, uses it as a guide to design and create your dental crown. Your second appointment will be about two weeks later after the lab has had time to customize the crown. At your second appointment, your dentist will fit and adjust your crown to the tooth and permanently place it into the mouth using dental cement. Your dentist will make a temporary crown to protect your prepared tooth between visits.
